Perky-Pet Copper Panorama Wild Bird Feeder

With the Perky-Pet Copper Panorama Bird Feeder, the bird-watching views are unparalleled! This elegant feeder is sure to attract many birds to your backyard, providing you with plenty of enjoyment as birds congregate on the circular perch! Boasting an innovative design, this feeder allows seed to evenly dispense into the seed tray and stops dispensing once the tray is full. As the birds continue to dine from the circular perch, the seed is replenished into the tray so it remains consistently full.

The Perky-Pet Copper Panorama Bird Feeder offers a sizable 2 lb seed capacity so your hungry birds are always in good supply. In addition, the feeder’s built-in drain holes prevent water from pooling in the reservoir so seed stays fresh for longer. Not only will the birds love it, it also means less seed waste for you! In addition, the large overhang shields the tray and birds as they dine.

Features

Sure-Lock Cap

The feeder’s unique Sure-Lock cap system secures the lid in place to prevent persistent squirrels from gaining access to the seed reservoir.

Antique Copper Finish

Not only is this feeder convenient and economical, it's also eye catching! The beautiful antique copper finish will make this a standout addition to your yard.

360-Degree Feeding

Featuring a convenient circular perch and seed tray, this feeder allows multiple birds to dine from every angle without having to compete for ports.

Hang Almost Anywhere

For your convenience, this feeder includes a built-in hanging cable to allow for versatile placement. Place it anywhere around your yard, patio, garden, or anywhere you birds can easily find it and you can have a great view!

The only reason it gets 1 star is I can''t give it 0. I''ve had this all winter, so this isn''t just a first impression. This is not designed to be used in any environment where there is even a chance that it will rain, snow, sleet or experience any form of precipitation. (although I suppose you could use it to feed indoor birds). The feeder has a cable running through the tube, it is used to hold the feeder together and to hang it. Well, the cable fittings are not sealed. Water runs down the cable, seed gets wet, whole thing jams up and no longer fills the feeding tray. And don''t even think about how useless it is when the temperature drops below freezing.

- Made of steel with a (partial) copper-colored coating, not copper.
- Inadequate drainage holes that become clogged by small seeds.
- Inefficient lid shielding against rain, so seeds get wet in the tray.
- Locking lid mechanism allows rain to leak inside clumping seeds.
- Rust develops on coated and uncoated parts in less than ½ year.
- BPA risk upon handling its plastic body: Proposition 65 warning.
- 1-year warranty, but only if bought at their Perky-Pet webstore.

UPDATE

By June 2021 the above issues have not been corrected and remain a matter of concern.
____

This feeder is made in China by an unidentified manufacturer, and it is distributed by the Woodstream Corp. (a subsidiary of the Woodstream Group Inc.), holder of the Perky-Pet trademark. Woodstream also sells the feeder online through its websites in the US and Canada.

MATERIAL

The name the company uses for the feeder in Amazon is misleading, and their claim at the top of this webpage saying the material is "copper" is false.

The feeder is not made of copper, but of *easily rusting* steel coated with a copper-colored finish (in some but not all its areas), which is why it does not develop a patina with time but rust. The misinformation has steadily appeared in this Amazon page during the past seven years, if not more, despite several modifications of the page. In assessing the intention(s) behind such deceitful practice, it is noteworthy that Woodstream amended the name to ''Copper Finish Panorama'' in its Web stores several years ago.

PERFORMANCE

1. Drainage -- The food tray has 8 small holes in circular symmetry along its edge, which become easily clogged with the small seeds, such as white millet, of commercial bird food. This demands routine cleanings to avoid rain flooding the tray and clumping the seeds.

2. Clumpling & Leaks -- Mostly for long and strong rains, water leaks inside and wicks the seeds in the container, clumping them [Fig. A]. The seed clumping needs to be broken apart manually. This annoying problem, not present in our other feeders, arises from two design faults impacting rain protection :

(i) The more obvious fault is the insufficient coverage provided by the cap, whose diameter is only 1½ times larger than that of the tray, so it only protects the tray from rain if there were no wind. After verifying that a larger cover placed above the feeder reduced clumping of seeds in the tray, I attached a 16" clear plastic cover (see here ) over the cap [Fig. B].

(ii) A less obvious fault, but a more egregious one, is the poor sealing around the hanging wire as it enters the cap locking mechanism, which is where rain water leaks into the plastic container and causes the upper axial clumping following rains. I fixed this design fault by pressing a ball of beeswax ball, about 0.5" in diameter, rolled by hand to warm it up until soft, on the wire entrance to the lock [Fig. C, arrow]. The wax seal does not impede lifting the cap for refilling the feeder; after closing the cap, the wax only needs to be pressed in place to seal again the wire''s conduit.

3. Marauders -- Neither doves nor medium or larger size corvids have managed to raid the feeder despite lots of attempts. In contrast, the distance between the perching ring to the bottom tray is rather suitable for smallish Mid-Atlantic birds [Fig. D]. Also, with the feeder hanging 8 feet above ground, and no nearby structures from which to jump, our squirrels have been unable to reach it so far despite their Machiavellian lusting looks at the feeder.

RUSTING

The feeder began to rust after a few months of being outdoors. Rust developed in the steel surfaces with the copper-colored finish (e.g., outer side of the sliding lid [Figs. E1 and E2] and the tray and rods supporting the perch ring [Fig. E4]) as well as those without the finish (e.g., the lid''s inner side [Fig. E3]). Over the multi-year span of this review and update, the progression of rusting has been relatively steady.

BPA TOXIC RISKS

This feeder requires routine cleaning, which in turn requires handling it. At the time of this writing, unlike other Web stores, this page (as well as those of Amazon in other languages) continues to fail to inform shoppers that the feeder''s plastic body contains a *highly toxic* plasticizer, bisphenol A (BPA), and carries a California''s Proposition-65 warning [Fig. F] as it "can harm the female reproductive system, including effects on ovaries and eggs." (Further, a 2021 study from the University of Bayreuth, Germany, shows that even small amounts of BPA cause alarming disruptions of signals between nerve cells in fish brain, and asserts that its "findings make it very likely" that bisphenols also affect the human brain.)

There is no good cause for Woodstream not providing a Prop-65 warning in this page, even more since not long ago the company had added the warning to a then separate Amazon page of the fake cooper two-tier feeder (a page no longer extant). Once again, in assessing the intention(s) behind the absence of BPA information on this page, it is noteworthy that the company''s own Perky-Pet website shows a Prop-65 warning on birth defects and other reproductive harm. The most plausible interpretation of such discordant behavior is that this company avoids disclosing BPA information that may harm its sales in Amazon at the expense of a health risk to shoppers. If so, that would be remarkably unethical.

** NOTE ** Some hand sanitizers and many skin care products have chemicals that enhance skin penetration, such as isopropyl myristate and propylene glycol, which can increase the absorption of BPA through the skin by up to 100-fold. Avoid touching the plastic body of this feeder after using those products, and always wash your hands with soap and water after touching it.

WARRANTY

At the time of this writing, the "Product Documentation (PDF)" link in this page provides a "30-Day Satisfaction Guaranteed Policy" as well as "12-Month Limited Warranty." The first is not a warranty but a list of the limitations to get refunded of the shipping costs if returning the feeder within 30 days of purchase. Compared to other feeder brands offering a lifetime care, and cost- and shipping-free replacement parts, this policy is user-unfriendly. Despite its presence here, the limited warranty does not apply to feeders purchased in Amazon but only to those purchased in another online store, which happens to be the Woodstream''s Perky-Pet store sneaked under a different URL. Bah!

I have this bird cooper feeder and a blue feeder hanging from the same shepherds hook and I noticed over time that the birds were always eating from the blue feeder but not this copper one. It puzzled me and bothered me because I think this bird feeder is so pretty, it gleams in the sun and it has a bigger perch area. I finally figured out that when it rains (and we''ve had a very rainy few weeks!) all the seed sitting in the well at the bottom gets soaked. I went to refill it the other day and all the seed was compacted into a damp brick. This a huge flaw in the design. Whenever it rains water just pools in the bottom and the moisture even spreads up into the seed above. The blue bird feeder just has openings that are level with the perch, there is no well for water to collect. I will stick with that sort if feeder in the future, this bird feeder is useless if it rains where you live.

Very nice design, loads of birds are attracted to it. On the downside it started to rust very quickly. It seems completely illogical to me to use a material that will rust like this on an item that is meant for outdoor use. Why would you do that? It’s got to be laziness, or ignorance, or cheapness - or maybe they INTEND for this feeder to wear out, so that users like myself will eventually rebuy it and they make more money.

I’ve had this feeder for nearly three years and it is completely rusted now, through and through. The lid won’t stay on well anymore. Fortunately (or unfortunately), I actually will be one of the suckers who rebuys it, because it’s a good price and I do really like it, aside from the rusting. Definitely would not pay more than the $16 for it though.

I bought this feeder because I sit at my kitchen counter several hours per day, swilling coffee, reading the NY Times, and answering email. I wanted something to look at, when I got tired of dealing with Online World. A few birds would be nice, I thought.

An unexpected benefit was that I''ve made the acquaintance of a rather plump squirrel, who has spent 3-4 hours per day for the last week, trying to figure out how to get the bird seed by some sort of direct assault. He sits on the branch above, on the ground below, and on the tree at the same level (see photo) contemplating the anti-squirrel security measures incorporated in the Perky-Pet Panorama Bird Feeder.

I suppose he''s not especially bright or innovating, but 20 hours of hard squirrel thinking haven''t gotten him any closer to the solution. (Don''t feel sorry for him - the birds flick lots of seed to the ground, where his patience is rewarded.) I take that to mean the designers succeeded.

If he eventually finds a solution, and I find him swinging and gorging himself, I''ll post an update.

This feeder is working great. You can see by the pictures that the birds like it just fine. I have this mounted under the eve at the kitchen window. We got hit with a pretty wild rain storm recently the other day that was pouring rain right at the feeder. I thought I would have to clean it out and start over, but the next morning the birds were right back. I inspected it to find the food as dry as when it first entered. There was one little place right at the bottom that showed some moisture. Not even enough to consider.
It is messy. These birds have no table manners, and the large trough allows them access to all parts of the seed that you have in there. I have mine over concrete so you will also see a lot of birds on the ground getting spill over.
Easy to load, easy to clean, and made with quality materials. Great value!

I had a different bird feeder that had the perch closer to the main body, and it was difficult for larger birds like cardinals to land on the perch. So I was only getting the smaller birds like sparrows. This one has the perch about 1.5 inches from the body, and birds of all sizes seem to prefer it over the other one. Also, the other one had a green plastic roof, and the colored plastic tends to fade pretty badly after about one season in the direct sun. I''m hoping this metal one holds up better. The only reason I gave it four stars, not five, is that the roof comes up by you pressing a button that releases the lock holding the roof to the central steel cable that you hook onto your hanging stand. It''s a bit awkward to press the button and pull the roof up at the same time, definitely a two-handed operation. I had to use a little force, and it would be easy to spill the bird seed all over the place if you are not careful. Hopefully, that will get easier after it "breaks in" with a few uses. That''s just a nitpick--overall it looks great and the birds seem to like it. (Edit: it DID break in with a few uses, and a wide variety of birds seem to love this bird feeder, so I''m raising it to five stars.)

UPDATE: here''s a picture of the Perky-Pet bird feeder next to the one I had previously. You''ll notice that two birds are on the Perky Pet and none on the older one. I don''t really know why, but birds have a strong preference for the Perky Pet. They just ignore the other one.

The bird feeder looks good but in use it spills more than half the seed you put in it. Initially I didn''t see this as a problem thinking the birds would take the seed from the ground. They did indeed eat some of the seed. Last month though I spotted a large rat eating the seed that had spilled. I immediately contacted the council pest control. A man arrived and he spotted evidence that rats had moved in under my summer house which was next to where the bird feeder had been hung. He put down baited rat traps. He returned a week later and found that he had eradicated a family of rats totalling at least seven rats including five half grown and two full grown. I smashed the bird feeder and put it in the bin as soon as I saw the first rat. The pest control man suggested that I should stop feeding the birds at least for the next few months. He rated the bird feeder as total rubbish.

The only thing I would say is this is quite large and therefore very heavy if filled up completely. But with the wet winter months I have stopped filling the feeders up as the food gets damp, goes mouldy and rots before it''s eaten and the feeders need emptying and washing frequently. So with half the amount of food it is fine and the birds seem very happy with it too.
